Why Running Benefits from Having a Goal

How Running Events and a Group Can Help Beginners Run More Regularly
“I’m not a sheep to follow running events.”
That was the opinion of a friend of mine when I invited her to finally take this step toward a life with more movement and more regular running. In my experience, participating in running events can be extremely beneficial — in many different ways.
Why We Persevere More Easily When We Have a Goal

Research shows that people who sign up for running events usually train more regularly and more systematically than those without a clear goal. Once we register for a race, exercise suddenly becomes more than just a good intention. It becomes a journey toward something that challenges us. And that is precisely why we find it much easier to persist. Persistence is essential if we want to achieve the consistency of movement that is so beneficial for us.
This is not surprising at all. Human beings struggle to persist in something that has no horizon. Motivation is the energy that guides us toward a goal. If the goal is clear, motivation becomes stronger. If the goal is hidden in fog, our willpower becomes foggy as well.
A race, an event, or a shared goal creates a kind of inner compass. Suddenly, Monday’s run is no longer just “something healthy.” It becomes part of a path toward an event that has a date, a place, people, energy, and meaning.
It is good to remember that we do not train in order to win races. We go to races so that we can more easily win against our everyday laziness.
Why Running Events Help Beginners
Many people want to start running, but they are afraid. They fear being too slow, getting out of breath, or looking awkward. That is exactly why running events and beginner running groups can be such a valuable experience.
At Urbani tekači, we have noticed for many years that people find it much easier to stay active when they have the support of a group and a clear goal. For many beginners, signing up for a recreational race is the first step into a world of more regular movement.
Many beginners believe they need to be able to run continuously for several kilometers before participating in a race. In reality, many running events can be completed successfully by alternating walking and running. This is exactly the gentle approach we often use in beginner groups at Urbani tekači.
Running is not reserved for the fast or the perfect. Running is, above all, an opportunity to move.
Running Turns Movement into a Story

Running events have another interesting power. They turn running into a story.
When we run alone on our usual route, we can easily become trapped in routine. But when we arrive at the starting line among people with similar doubts, wishes, and hopes, something special happens. We realize that we are not alone. That others are also searching for strength inside their weaknesses. And that together, we are capable of more.
Of course, some people might say: “I don’t need a medal.” And they are right. Most runners do not cross the finish line because of the medal. The medal is only a small symbol of something much more important — a mosaic of experiences.
The early morning rush to leave home. The shared drive with friends.
Conversations during the warm-up. Views of nature. The feeling of tired legs quietly whispering: “We are here to take another step forward.”
Perhaps running events are not a herd at all. Perhaps they are simply a modern campfire around which people still gather when they need movement, community, and the feeling of belonging somewhere. And it truly feels good to belong to a good-hearted group of people.
Bohinj Can Be a Beautiful First Step

If someone takes their very first running step this year, Bohinj is almost the ideal place to begin.
At the Tek štirih srčnih mož running event, which will take place on June 7, 2026 in Bohinj, there will also be a 5 km distance that is very suitable for beginners. With a combination of walking and running, almost anyone who can comfortably walk can complete it.
Race registrations are open on the Tek štirih srčnih mož website.
That is also why Urbani tekači will organize a free beginner workshop in Bohinj on Saturday, June 6, where we will learn a healthy and friendly approach to running.(Time and location will be announced later.)
If you are thinking about starting to run, you do not necessarily have to begin alone. Sometimes all it takes is one date, one group of people, and the first shared steps.
Perhaps the hardest part is simply those first few steps. After that, our legs slowly begin carrying us toward places we once did not even dare to look at.
Frequently Asked Questions from Beginners
Can I participate in a race even if I cannot run continuously yet?
Yes. Many beginners use a combination of walking and running.
How much should I train for a 5 km race?
For most beginners, 2 to 3 training sessions per week are enough.
Are running events suitable for slower runners as well?
Of course. Most recreational races are designed for people with very different fitness levels.
How can I start running without injuries?
Gradual progression, suitable running shoes, and enough rest are very important. For beginners, I usually recommend not running more than twice per week during the first three months.
